Aralu

Aralu is Kalabhi’s continuing initiative dedicated to creating professional theatre for children in Mangaluru. It was conceived with the belief that children deserve theatre that is created for them with the same seriousness, artistic quality and care given to professional theatre.

Aralu brings children into a structured theatre-making process where they work with professional theatre directors and practitioners from different backgrounds and places. Every edition introduces a different artistic team, allowing children to encounter different approaches to acting, movement, music, storytelling, design and performance. Rather than following one fixed style, Aralu creates space for children to experience the diversity of theatre through different directors, different artistic perspectives and different productions.

The process goes beyond a conventional children's workshop. The children are taken through the process of creating a complete theatre production from theatre exercises and character development to rehearsals, costumes, music, lights, sets and final stage presentation. The aim is to give children an authentic experience of theatre-making while maintaining a professional approach to the production.

A significant part of Aralu is also its effort to take theatre beyond the conventional stage. Initiatives such as Aralu Sanchara allow children to experience performance in public spaces, interact with audiences and discover theatre in unexpected environments. These experiences become part of the larger theatrical journey rather than being limited to the final production.

Why Aralu?

Mangaluru has a strong theatre and cultural community, but there has been a need for a consistent platform dedicated specifically to professional theatre for children. Children often encounter theatre either through school programmes or occasional performances, but opportunities to actually participate in a professionally guided theatre-making process are limited.

Aralu attempts to create that space.

It brings professional theatre practitioners and young participants together, allowing children to experience theatre not simply as an extracurricular activity, but as a serious artistic form. At the same time, it creates opportunities for theatre practitioners to develop new work with children and for audiences in Mangaluru to experience children's theatre as a meaningful part of the city's cultural landscape.

What Aralu Believes In

Different directors. Different practices. Different perspectives. Different theatre.

Every edition of Aralu intentionally works with different directors and theatre practitioners. This is important to its identity. The objective is not to teach children one particular method of theatre, but to expose them to the many possibilities within theatre.

A director from one background may approach a story through movement and physicality, while another may work through music, text, imagination or visual storytelling. Each production therefore becomes a new experience for the children and contributes to a broader understanding of theatre.

Vision

To establish a strong and continuing culture of professional theatre for children in Mangaluru, where children have access to quality theatre experiences and opportunities to participate in the creation and performance of theatre.

Mission

To create professional, accessible and diverse theatre experiences for children through workshops, productions, collaborations and public performances, while bringing together theatre practitioners from different backgrounds and exposing children to varied theatrical practices.

At its heart

Aralu is not simply a workshop where children learn theatre.

Aralu is a professional theatre space where children get to experience the complete world of theatre as performers, learners, creators and audiences.

And I think “Professional Theatre for Children” should become the permanent descriptor under the Aralu name throughout your archive, website and documentation. It gives the whole project a much clearer identity.
