Creative Theatre Unlock
Creative Theatre Workshop – 2021: Creative Theatre Unlock was conceived as a way for theatre practitioners to take a short pause after the long period of the COVID-19 pandemic and reconnect with their theatre practice.
The initiative began with Ujwal U.V. and Bhuvan Manipal coming together to revisit and revise their earlier learning in theatre. As part of this process, they undertook a 15-day residential workshop, joined by Sujith from Karkala, a graduate of Rangaadhyana Kendra, Kundapura, and Nithesh from Parangipete.
Following the residential revision workshop, the initiative was extended to the public through five free workshops for participants above the age of 10. These sessions were designed to explore the possibilities of theatre acting in different ways, with a focus on creative impulses, body and movement, imagination, and transforming ideas into performance. The workshops also explored the essence of film and screen-based acting, allowing participants to look at performance beyond conventional stage acting.
The participants included Nithesh Farangipete, Varadraj, Udith U.V., Megharani, Harshitha L.R., Trisha Shetty and Suhani Salian. The programme was organised under the management of Ujwal U.V., Creative Director of Kalabhi Theatre, with Bhuvan Manipal, a Ninasam graduate, serving as the resource person.
Creative Theatre Unlock became an opportunity to return to theatre after a prolonged interruption and to look at performance through renewed exploration. Rather than approaching acting through a single method, the workshop opened up different possibilities through body, movement, imagination, creative impulse and performance, creating a space for both theatre practitioners and participants to reconnect with the creative process.
